Alan,

You might want to consider putting in a rebuilt rack, as you're going to have to remove the rack to rebuild it. I bought a rebuilt for my 87 Westy from All Eurasian Auto Parts this summer, I was very satisfied. The rack was under $300, with a core deposit of $200.

Here's the parts listing: http://catalog.worldpac.com/ibusiness/JSP.v.1.01/wizard.jsp?header=http://www.alleurasianautoparts.com/header.txt&footer=http://www.alleurasianautoparts.com/footer.txt&partner=ipb&clientid=alleurasianautoparts.com&baseurl=http://www.alleurasianautoparts.com/&cookieid=28O0SELB428O0SELB3&year=1987&make=VW&model=VAN--003&category=All&part=Steering+Rack
