Subject: Strange idle issue
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Happy Friday all,

My 1991 GL, 4 speed, has a strange idle issue. Last weekend, did some work, including replacing a broken alternator bracket, as well the manifold intake hoses. I removed the Throttle Body, cleaned it out, as well as cleaning the Throttle Positioning Switch (TPS). The TPS was caked with dirt and sand. I put everything back together, and what a difference. No more bogging down upon cold start, and when in step on the gas, she goes without hesitation.

Now the idle issue. Prior to doing this work, the idle was around 1000, with some fluctuation, which I attribute to the broken alternator bracket. Now upon start up, she idles around 1000, but after driving to the stop sign at the end of the street, the idle goes to 1500 and sometimes as high as 1800. Then, when sitting at the next traffic light, as the van heats up, I can see the idle drop to about 1100. Just before the idle drops, it almost feels like something changes. I really can't describe the change, I just feel it.

I'm thinking the Throttle Body is worn, but the drop in idle after warming up, is throwing me off.

Any guidance would be welcome.

Jim Wilmington, NC
