Looking at these numbers, your problem is unburned hydrocarbons. You need to look for ignition or lean miss fire or an exhaust valve problem. You are very close. Based on the CO NOx your Catalyst is working, but it just doesn't have enough capacity to finish off the HC. Almost all aftermarket cats do not have the same capacity as OEM. Emicco is the closest for the Vanagon but still does not have as much active material. If all is well, you should have near 0 HC before the Cat anyway.

Maryland emissions are driving me crazy.I just failed a third test this evening.

My previous test on 1 November gave these results:

HC CO NOx

standard 2.40 GPM 80.00 GPM 3.00 GPM

mine 0.9921 GPM 12.3648 GPM 4.2152 GPM

I subsequently replaced the oxygen sensor, catalytic convertor, spark plugs and wires.

I got these results this evening:

HC CO NOx

standard 2.40 GPM 80.00 GPM 3.00 GPM

mine 0.4208 GPM 5.8560 GPM 3.1568 GPM

I am now at a loss to know how to proceed to get it to pass. I know what to do to get a waiver but I'd like to know what goes on. What are the likely causes? Incidentally, the cat conv I replaecd appeared to be in fine condition.

What do we think? I would like to hear some wisdom.

Cheers, -- mordo 1990 Carat
