Ed-

Unless someone has already modified the the plastic cover over the heater you've got to remove the seat to get at the philips screws. Once you have it off you can trim the cover so you won't have to do it that way in the future.

I have a 1987 Vanagon Wolfsburg with the z-bed. and also a 1985 Westfalia. I need to get at the rear heater fan and likely replace in both of them. (I don't have the Bentley manual with me now or I'd look for help there first.) Do I have to take out the seat to get at the heater to replace the fan? Can anyone point to a post that describes the removal procedure for each type of seat?

Thanks, Ed in CT
