The shift linkage change does not follow years, it follows transmission types. The way it attaches and works is very different at the tranny end and can't be interchanged without swapping to the matching tranny type. The early type was used on all aircooled and many diesels only. The later type was used on all waterboxers. An additional variation was for 5 speeds, same later setup at the tranny end but very different in the front lever area.
