When I was soldering some of the larger wires to make a Subaru-VW harness I attached some hemostats to the side with the shrink wrap to suck up some of the heat and save the wrap for the soldered joint. In this case you might think of putting vicegrips on the wire to act as a heat sink to help protect the insulation.

Has anyone came out with the length you need for the Vanagon?
