I just look at what the manufacturers do. They usually, and VW did with the vanagon starting in 86, but it in the passenger compartment somewhere. After all, that's the driest, most temp stable part of the car - where the people go ! As an engine conversion specialist, I would only put the ecu under the back seat. It's a nice short shot forward from the left forward corner of the engine compartment to the left side of the under-the-rear-seat-area. It's really easy to get at there, not buried under the dash or in a kick panel like subaru or Volvo respectively. You can get right to it for testing, whatever, stays nice n' dry there etc. And takes up very little room under the back seat. I even take the 86 and alter 2.1 metal ECU cover and use them to mount ECU's in, looks factory, etc. Just watch how VW changes things - they 'used to' anyway, say how many improvements there were from one year to the next in the old buses - point is, they upgraded things as the went along. And after having the ecu in the back from 1980 to 1895, they moved it under the back seat starting with the 2.1 engine in 86. They didn't do it to use up more wire; they did it because it's an improvement. Scott www.turbovans.com

Just that it would be another location for dust, dirt and mositure to get in, even if equipped with a sealing boot. Multiple connections can result in potential signal loss, although it would probably be negligible.

Why would someone want to relocate the ECU anyway? You've got the benefit of airflow from the left airscoop to keep it nice and cool. Besides, "room" is at a premium in my Westy with every nook and cranny spoken for :-) -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 73 K Ghia Coupe "Denise" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************************** On Dec 11, 2007 2:39 PM, Brendan Slevin <brendan@bellatazza.com> wrote:
