FWIW, when I first got my '85 Westy, back in '02, it was obvious that the thermostat was stuck open. When I removed it for replacement it looked normal and opened and shut with the "pot of water on the stove" test. Anyway, the replacement thermostat worked properly and still does. I tossed the old one in spite of the test. It apparently would stick in use. I don't know what brand it was.
