The only problem I have seen with the mobil 1 ATF is that racks no longer fail. Maybe just coincidence. Fun Bus still has the original rack at 252k.

Anyway, the Vanagon power steering system is not all that particular. ATF was the spec and most any hydraulic oil will do. It was changed many years ago to the Audi fluid for cold weather use. Pentosin 7.1 or 11.1 is the common replacements. The synthetic ATF has the viscosity range to operate well in colder weather.
