The thingie on the front of the LT is an air filter.  What is it is a
cyclone air filter - the air is spun and the particles / water goes to the
outside and then collect in the white cup that hangs from the
snorkel.   I have one of these on my Syncro Westfalia and my LT
4x4 - the paper air filter is always clean!
