Just my $02 for what its worth.
These vanagons that we care for and pour countless hours and $$$ for parts into does *NOT* even remotely represent their value to the insurance companies and the only way to get around that is have it appraised and insured for stated value.
So keep all receipts to prove what was done to your vehicle and get a hold of an reputable appraiser. I pay only a slight premium to have my Syncro covered at what I believe to be fair market value, and that is well worth it for peace of mind.

I would have an appraiser look at the vehicle.
It may be late for that, but worth a shot.
I have all of my "keeper" vans appraised and than get insurance from that number so there is no monkey business if you file a claim.
VW specific appraisers are out there.
I found mine in Hemming's Motor News.
Clark,
Very sorry to hear it was totaled.
Others have been in your position and have bought the van back from the insurance company and parted it to recoup some of the lose.

folks, i have seen clark's westy and it was in awesome shape with no
seam
rust or other body damage prior to being hit.. and he told me their
payoff
offer..which was a complete joke.. (ive paid more than their offer for
complete
westys that were in worse shape!) so lets all try to help ... my advice
is to
collect info from gowesty.com, jdbimports.com, poptopheaven.com, ebay,
thesamba.com, etc...
personally i cant even believe they totalled it.. but insurance
companies are
in the business of taking your money and trying to screw you when it
comes to
a claim, so this is par for the course..
good luck with the fight!!
