Richard, I have been told by local Vanagon Gurus that you can use air-cooled heaters on water-boxers. As I understand it there is a minor modification necessary to mount the air-cooled element on a water boxer. I believe that is what I have on my Syncro, last winter one of our Gurus had some heaters in stock and I purchased three of them for $35.00 each. One is under my Syncro, one I gave to a coworker whom has a `84-`85? 7 passenger, and one I kept for a spare or to use on our Westy Syncro(not likely as we do not drive it during the winter). I was lazy and did not install mine on the Syncro but had a shop do it while they were taking care of some other items for me. They are easy to install and definitely help on cold mornings, which is every morning here at the moment.
