I've had a dozen cheap digital millimeters. And a couple old VTVMs, remember those? About two years ago I found a used Fluke for $65. There is a difference and I haven't used any of the cheap meters since. I should have broke down and bought a Fluke ten years ago, it would have cost the same as all the money I spent on the cheap ones which all break eventually. There is a difference in the way the reading is displayed, how it handles transients and spikes. The Fluke is just easier to use. So it's not only longevity.
