The following is not meant as a criticism of anyone except VW dealers, and I'm not going to give my opinion on whether or not to replace nuts, but: How often do we depend on the VW dealer for technical information or advice about Vanagons?

Checked at the local dealer during lunch. He shows the parts, described in the EKTA as a "self locking nut". 8mm.

The parts guy then went on to say that their techs typically re-use the nuts, and use loctite on them, because nobody wants to wait 3 days for a few nuts.
