I had a 1993 Eurovan that caught fire. On the 93, one of the fuel line "T" pieces had shrunk over 7 years and began to leak (over the distributor). VW claimed it wasn't their fault, however VW of Canada had recalled their 93 Eurovans two years earlier for the same problem. I persisted, and got NHTSA to force VW to do a recall, and got a settlement from VW. This was for the 5 cyl version, but you might want to have your friend (or your friend's insurance company) check to see if they could determine a source of the fire.
