Soaked coil, eh? In that case, I bet a company that makes products for dune buggies and off-roaders would have some kind of waterproof coil case or other remedy.

One of the things that's different about maintaining these old vans is that, unlike vintage Alfa enthusiasts or whatever, we're trying to make aging vehicles reliable for 2000-mile trips in all kinds of inclement weather, often with the precious cargo of one's family on board. Each failure point needs attention in a way it does not if you're just driving to the local convenience store now and then.
