Hear is my scenario that I am looking for some feedback from the wise list gurus: My 1990 Westfalia suddenly started running extremely rich/losing power/stalling when it reached the peak operating temperature (about 1/2 up on the temperature gauge). I decided to replace the temp II sending unit since it was much older than the O2 sensor; the airflow meter checked out and in general the nature of the symptoms. Now the problem no longer exists but my operating temperature according to the gauge is much lower. I ran the part # from my sensor that I got at the dealership through the search by part # locator on the Bus Depot site (very useful tool-Thanks Ron). It checks out and is blue in color-all seemingly correct. My old temp II sensor that I removed looks exactly like the coolant temperature sending unit pictured on this page of the Bus Depot site _http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=251919501D_ (http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=251919501D) . So my theory is that the last shop that replaced this particular temp II sensor installed a coolant temperature sending unit by mistake. Does anyone concur or disagree with this theory? Might I also have a problem with my thermostat sticking open that causes my temperature to now appear to run so cool? Does anyone know how the electrical values of these two sending units compare? Just to rule out one other possibility; I did replace the correct sensor per the diagram in Bentley that was double checked with the Digifant manual and Alldata. I also verified that the wiring terminated at the correct ECU pins at the computer. Wiring is all in tact and connections are all clean. Any help from the list would validate my hunch that my Vanagon mind has not jumped the track and permanently derailed from the fuel line job fumes from earlier this summer. Man I hate that kind of dain brammage! Thanks everybody! David Clarkson 90 Westy (246k)
