Yes, there are solutions to the dynamic range issue of image sensors
in digital cameras. Every generation of image capture technology has
their own advantages and shortcomings. Avoid very high contrast scenes
when using digital cameras is what I will do. Fuji Velvia 50 was the
most popular film for images on National Geographic Magazine. It is
a high contrast film (narrow dynamic range). It would be a terrible
mistake trying to shoot it for high contrast scenes. Velvia is still
available but it is not widely used any more.

Well, this is not a forum to discuss too much about photography. Just
thought to point out Andrew's problem in that particular issue of his
camera.
