i have a parts westy here that was let go so long, that water leaking in around the fill ports has actually rusted thru the side of the van where that horizontal beam is, a few inches below the ports.. (there is a reinforcement beam there on all vanagons) there is a holizontal line of rot right thru the wall.. like karl says, the insulation gets soaked, sops up water like a sponge and never dries out, holds it against the sheetmetal and it rots right thru from the inside. this is in addition to the rotting going on down where the floor meets the rocker panel seam.. water sits behind there and takes the path of least resistance, the rocker seam.

the only way to fix this is yank out your westy interior... fix the rust, treat it, and seal everything up w. new seam sealer.. and reseal the fill ports..

this kind of rust has nothing to do with road salt.
