I use Thule bars, the tall foot kind, mounted on the rain gutters and are high enough to clear the pop-top. I have the rear bar far back so the top can be raised when the kayak is off.

And ropes? Straps? I've been using bungees which maintain tension at all times , unlike straps and ropes. Three bungees fore and one or two aft .

And they are fast to use, unlike ropes and straps which also flap around and vibrate and need to be re-cinched.

I've been using bungees for 10 years, and only had the kayak come off the top once- when I forgot to put the bungees on! It sailed forward off the top into the middle of a neighborhood street intersection.

Good thing it is made of polyethylene, it bounced a few times without damage.
