Hi , ;-)

Well, I do want to say I have a new appreciation lately for the 80 to 84 vanagon, how they feel handling-wise.

I'm driving an 82 Diesel Westy with 98 Subaru Imprezza engine lately, before I hand it over when I'm done with it.

I must say it has a nimble feeling that 85 and later ones don't have, especially if they have power steering.

As for which is easier to troubleshoot- I assume you are talking about the 1.9 wbxr engine and system versus the 2.1.

They both have their quirks. I've spent hours and hours getting 1.9's to work just right, like start perfectly, idle well, and go well.

2.1's seem to be less finicky in general to me, but they have their issues too, like more plastic parts, for example.

Well, living full time in a westy for 9 years.............that is very noteworthy all right !!

And having two identical vans.............that is SO handy for testing parts on 'the other one' if you have to, or just robbing a part in an emergency.

Scott

Hey Scott - I "resemble" that remark.....I luv both my 84 GL & 84 Westy. Some others here may rightfully disagree, but I find the 84's easier to troubleshoot than my buddy's 87. I might sell the GL someday, but I plan to be buried in the Westy (hell, I've been living in it full-time for almost 9 years now anyway) ;-)

On my paycheck, I could never afford a later edition of Westy, much less any Vanagon Westy as a replacement.

You should only let that go if it gets you into a Vanagon Camper, 87 and later preferred,

or 85 at the oldest, those are the first good year vanagon body. Scott www.turbovans.com <http://www.turbovans.com/>
