This is the camera's CCD image sensor lacking dynamic range to capture both shadow and highlight at the same time. This is a common issue of digital capture among most point and shoot digitlal cameras. Higher end DSLRs are supposed to be better but need to avoid high contrast scenes still. CCD sensors are all linear. That is part of the reason why they lack of dynamics. Films have logarithm HD curves. But no doubt films have their own set of problems too.

Most of my travel on my Vanagon or Westy were for photography. Vanagons are best for this purpose for me.
