Most drivers in California drive at 75 MPH or faster on freeways and
some highways. Only traffic congestion will slow them down. Vanagons
are not up to the task for fast driving. This may be why Vanagons become
rare in California. Cops usually ignore cars not exceeding 80 MPH.
People are used to drive fast. Californians are spoiled.
I was once followed by a highway patrol for perhaps half a minute.
The cop apparently knew where the blind spot was behind me to my right
so I could not see it. I drove at a constant speed of 75 MPH. I eventually
became aware that the cop was behind me so I slowed sown a little. The
cop quickly took off and passed me at a speed beyond 80 MPH when he
noticed that I began to slow down. I was driving my Passat that night.
There was another car also driving at the same pace ahead of me. I did
not try to pass it for a while. This might be why the cop did not pull
me over.
