One has to keep in mind that manufacturers design for a targeted
performance. Once achieved, the product is put on the market. It is
difficult to go outside the parameters for which a design is created,
without sacrificing some of the tenets of the original design. Witness
the really obnoxious horsepower that be achieved with the air-cooled VW
engines of yesteryear. Yet to achieve that kind of horsepower, the
engines are modified and new parts created to the point the engine is
not what it was to start with, and no longer conforms to those original
parameters, and will no longer meet the performance goals originally
intended.
If one wants a pretty solid performing engine, one that will get
150,000 plus miles with relatively few problems, get a properly rebuilt
(read - Boston Engines) WBX, install it properly, and drive it like a
sane person and not some madman, don't dog it, and provide routine
maintenance for it, and the thing will last a very long time. In other
words, keep it stock - it ain't no hot-rod! - never will be, but it will
serve like a faithful dog if treated well..I'm into my 12th year with a
vVanagon, and I got the experience of which I speak.
