When the water pump of my 84 broke I made a decision to take the working one from my 83.5 to install it on the 84, then wait for a new one to go back to the 83.5 later. In about 4 hours I dismantled both water pumps from the two Vanagons and installed one as planned on the 84. But I rebuilt the 83.5 engine a few months earlier so I was already mechanically conditioned to deal with the water pump. I can agree that it is not trivial at all. David
