Hi,
Never heard the term 'shelf road' ............must a Colorado thing !~
It's sure gorgeous there.
In the late 60's I lived in Denver and would buy 8 gallons of gas for $ 2.00
and drive clear up to 11,000 jeep roads and passes and back on that. Like an
all day mountain and jeep road adventure for two bucks in gas.

And having to deal with something like a water pump, and gratefully and
easily identified and 'clear cut' issue, as opposed to electronic gremlins
say..............what a nice bonding experience !
And that the margin for messing up badly are small. Where there's no easy
rescue of a non-running syncro or vanagon, you sure don' want to be breaking
off some corroded fastener or dropping a small part in a bad place, or
loosing something .......I like it when there's more at stake like that.
In a shop in town there's not much at risk other than inconvenience, but up
in the mountains like that .......towing and coasting aren't that
feasible.....
Anyway, what Vaanagonfun !

It can even be done in a three hours at 11,000' on a
shelf road.  Of course, they practiced in camp the day
before....
