I have not empirically tried to get down in the dark/sleepy w/ the shelf deployed, but I believe there is plenty of room to get down. If one is very unstable in those situations, you could flip the shelf up to give you all the room you need, if you took whatever you had on the shelf off?

Mr. BZ-shelf looks like it would be a nice nite stand for a clip on light, water bottle, books, portable toilet, etc. if you remember that it is there!
