That's a great question. The answer needs to be qualified though. It's also tough to say because all of the highest claimed numbers for conversions besides ours are not measured, but guestimated or factory crank numbers in their original applications... not to say they are way off, who knows, you don't know till you know.

If you want the answer to "what is the most torquey engine conversion that won't destroy the rest of the driveline in a vanagon" then the answer is the turbo zetec, because the area under it's torque curve is the largest of any conversion without exceeding peak handling capabilities of the driveline. The safest approach is to fill out the curve under the peak torque limits of the driveline across the powerband. The R-TDI that David has has a way higher peak, but it completely stops at it's rev limit, which is just past the middle of the zetec powerband like other diesels, so even the area under his r-tdi torque curve will likely be less than that of the turbo zetec.

Who likes calculus and wants to reach a definitive answer... of course we would need to actually measure the torque he's making so we could actually compare to our measured numbers to calculate the number under the curve.
