"I am still in the fixing stage and have yet to put any miles on it."..says darrel after he wonders .... "Are Vanagons subject to a lot of breakdowns?"

hmmm ...i think i will relate my personal experience... i have been driving since i was 17... every vehicle i have ever been even close to has required towing at least once the vehicles i have purchased in my lifetime have all been at least 10 years old often my vehicles have been more than 20 years old ... my first one a Studebaker Lark which i had towed to my home to begin the restoration that never happened ... util i bought my present 89 vanagon i have never paid more than 1500$ for a vehicle ad the first real mechanical success i ever had was my first VW ... a 68 Bun

until then i only changed oil and minor easy parts ... the 68 bus i rebuilt every part then converted to westy myself from a wrecked westy i always shop at the bone yard first for everything ... including lights and battery

the present diesel vanagon is in tip top shape and i paid 20K $ for her a year ago

towed four times ... in one year of ownership ... and put more than 20K kilometers on the highway ... full throttle and the hammer down ... cept when i was being towed ;o(... ;o)

god bless BCAA Premium ... even used it to help out some folks who were not members and had gone off into the ditch just south of idaho border

bottom line ... dont leave home with out ...the best auto club membership you can afford yours
