Hi jeff,
Well, where are you ?
I could be interested in buying it, depending on location and condition.
But.........'you have no idea.' ...........first of all, you have a thousand
more rpm to play with. It's a considerable step up. A good
...........maybe 40 % better. At least 30 % 'more.' More zip. And better
fuel mileage too.
Lots of work, I would guess for you do the conversions, and expense in
conversion parts besides just the engine .......but the driving reward is
just great. And the pride of accomplishment too. Very rewarding. I don't
feel even a tiny bit like 'it's not a vw any more.' They're like stepping up
to the new standard for vanagons, a more modern engine.
I think it's just stupid how giant new pick up trucks are, utterly dumb,
burn lots of gas, very high lift level to the bed, and they are largely used
as 'one person cars' really. Imagine how much fuel is wasted every day by
those things hauling around just one person. Where I am, any regular 'mill
worker type' male drives a huge pick up, like it was a one person commute
car. Like that's the 'normal car' around here almost.
Scott

.< A vw TDI would
be better but a real man would have to have a 911agon nothing even>
First off, any guy that thinks what a guy drives or what engine it has in it
makes him a man has no idea what a "real man" is, and is nothing more than a
childish idiot. I've had to put up with this kind of attitude from deer
hunting/bass fishing/Nascar watching redneck coworkers for years. In their
opinion, no "real man" would drive a VW, period. Funny thing is too, that
one has recently spent more in repairs on his Ford F150 4x4 than I have
invested in my '84 Westy including purchase price. My dilemma is that I've
had a Subaru 2.2 nearly ready to go into my '84 for a while now, lacking
only the wiring harness. Now I've gotten considerable grief from VW buddies
and my 14 yr old daughter for even thinking of the Subaru conversion (It
won't be a VW anymore!). Well, now that I got my fuel injectors cleaned ( I
don't want to go there again!) and my 2.1 is running well again, plus with
the Euro spec ECU in there, I have to belive I'm already close to the
performance of a Subie 2.2. I'v
e driven a Westy with a Subie 2.5 , and I know I'm not close to that, but
I'd love to drive a 2.2 to make a comparison. I just took my Westy out for a
drive today, and I have no problem merging onto the highway, acceleration is
perfectly acceptable for a van of this size and weight. At 55 mph I floor it
and in seconds I'm doing over 70. On long grades at 55 I step on it and I
gain speed. Basically I'm perfectly happy with it as is. I have yet to tow
my motorcycle & trailer with it though (around 900-1,000 lbs) and that may
be the deciding factor. I almost sold the whole Subie set up weeks ago for
other reasons, sale fell thru, then I decided maybe I should hang on to it.
Now I'm thinking of selling it again. Jeff
