AFAIK, the pedal assembly for a manual transmission Vanagon can't be removed from the vehicle without removing one of the pedals first; the space between the fresh air duct and the front sheet metal isn't large enough for both pedals (or the mounting bracket) to pass through.
The Bentley shows nothing useful, but the Haynes has a written procedure for pulling the manual pedal assembly and it calls for unbolting the pedal mounting bracket and pulling it up far enough to reach the circlip for the pivot pin. then pushing the pin over enough to remove the clutch pedal (after removing the return spring), then the rest of the assembly can be pulled out of the top. This was the method I used when I repaired my clutch pedal back in 2000.
If someone has an easier way, please give us details.
Thanks,
Tim

Subject: How to remove clutch pedal ???
I am converting an auto vanagon to a syncro and am trying to get the clutch
pedal out of my syncro donor but cant get it to come loose. I removed the
dash, unbolted the clutch master cylinder, and unbolted the brake booster.
The Bentley only shows the lower portion of the pedal and the upper portion
of the brake booster, not the middle part where they appear to be connected.
Are there any other bolts that need to be removed?
There doesn't seem to be an easy way to access the top of the clutch pedal.
Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks
