So, even though you know it is possible for someone to not be able to smell
the propane oderant, you ask if the detector is neccasary. Well, it was not
a reqiurement when our Westies were built or one would be there. Most likely
one was not reqiured since we do not have heating or water heater devices.
Recently, while traveling in Florida in the RV, as we planned to sleep for a
few hours I turned on the furnaces and the water heater. Within 30 seconds
the propane detector went crazy. Gee, heater appear to be working. Turned
everything off. Still not smelling it inside. Go outside and yes I now smell
it. Turn on each thing separately. Turned out to be the water heater. Yep it
lighted. Found the heater tank fell slightly causing the exhaust baffles to
fall and partially block the exhaust outlet. This in turn caused back
pressure which was causing the propane to flow out the normal air inlet. Now
the way I see it, if not for the detector, I would not immediately known
about the problem. The Gas could have built up near the heater until it
ignited. I think we can guess the rest. So, for the $40 or so a detector
costs, if you are going to sleep with propane appliances running, it is very
cheap insurance.
BTW- I am thinking up upgrading the detector to one with the auto propane
shut off. Just in case I am not there next time.
