Just had to chime in on this one. Studded tires make a huge difference on just about any car, for sure.

But I'm just running plain-jane Michelin XT M/S tires on my 88 Wolfsburg manual and find it to be quite good in snow compared to many other vehicles I've driven. Starting out can be more challenging than some vehicles, but driving in the snow and ice - I have to agree with the original post - these beasts do a great job.
