If you have run the fan on each speed for 15 minutes mounted up complete to the radiator and the bearing sounds ok then you should be fine. It will turn faster with an alternator running rather than just a battery.

Unless you have A/C the fan often doesn't run much, depending on climate. The fan is not hard to change on a stock van without A/C just by lowering the radiator with hoses still attached. The stock rigid pipes end far from the radiator and long rubber hoses go the rest of the way. I'm sure this design was meant to allow this kind of access. Prior to 83 hoses did not.
