Oh you guys, I've heard really loud vanagon rad fan roaring like 3 times a year max, and I work on dozens of them full time and live where it's 95+ everyday all summer long. And an 85 has a two speed van anyway. ( and an AC van will turn on the fan hard just by selecting the 'on' on the AC switch, of course, and they do roar a bit all right ) And sure, it is shocking sometimes when they really hit warp factor all right, But I seldom experience it. Like It's pretty rare. But I don't stress equipment anyway, use a really good coolant mixture.......... I found this new stuff btw, sort of like water wetter .....by Royal Purple, that promotes an image of very high end......"Purple Ice" ....... "radiator super-coolant additive - reduces rad temps, conditions water pump seals." I add it as a general treatment on sobbie conversions and all waterboxers......... NOT because I'm trying to make up for some deficiency in the van's cooling system... Those 83 and up plastic tank radiators........ There is just nothin' wrong with those things baby. If they're 17 + years old they won't work like you'd like in challenging conditions.........but you only need to put a new one in once usually. Scott

Neil's just putting a rad into his air cooled van and hasn't yet had the shock/fear/disbelief of hearing Warp Factor Three on the cooling fan. :)
