I have pushed the reset while moving many times myself on many Vanagons. There are different speedo mechanisms on different years. I recall about 8 years ago on this list someone examined the workings of different mechanisms and noted that most were of a design that when the reset was pushed it first disengaged the odometer entirely before reseting the number wheels. Earlier ones did not do this and he assumed that these would have been more likely to fail at the time the button was pushed. I think there are aspects of this "don't reset while moving" warning that arose from valid observations but I think there are other explanations too.
