I don't know how long it actually took since I worked on it here and there in evenings and weekends. I spent around $2000 in conversion parts including engine seals, gaskets, timing belt and idlers, and water pump. The 3 main conversion parts are the engine to trans adapter, the motor mount support (bolts to the vanagon engine crossbar), and the exhaust header. I would recommend the shortened oil pan if you go off road. I didn't use the shortened oil pan on my 90' GL and it is pretty dinged up. The other parts can be purchased from smallcar, fabricated yourself, or found at the hardware / FLAPS stores. The subaru wire harness conversion takes the most time. You have to remove all the wires that aren't engine/FI related. send me an email if you want more info.
