The 'reserve' is just the red portion of the fuel gauge.
2.5 gallons sounds right.
first thing I'd do is inspect the fuel filter contents - empty it out
backwards and see what's in there. I look for dirt, rust, water, tiny shiny
metal parts.
and check if it's restricted.
But it's very possible the pick up sump area is clogged , that happens.
They'd have to try awful hard to jack a vanagon by the tank. It's a ways
forward to a fine central forward jacking point at the rear edge of the
spare tire carrier. Of course anything is possible, and if it was jacked
there, it would be very obviously dented in.
Did you *l o o k* Michael ? So often people rush to post and never even
open the engine cover or look at the most basic things even, like external
visual inspection, or so it would seem, fairly often. But it's fun to get
on the list of course !
Did it shut off early on filling by any chance ?
In diesel I have had them distinctly not be able to get the last 3 or 4
gallons of fuel.
And I have a 83 gas westy right now that could not draw fuel from the tank,
with the gauge showing 1/4.
More adventures for you !
Scott

I belive there is a 2.5 gallon reserve. ????

Sometimes, when someone attempted to lift the car by the tank, it may have
been dented. It could happen at a tire shop or a general repair shop also.
No other car has a tank in front, you know.
When you say, you ran out of gas, did you run out completely or the gauge
was just very low? Because in that case, it could be the gauge not showing
you correctly.

I ran out of gas today and it only took 13 gallons to fill it. What could be
going on here. The tank is a few years old. I don't remember having problems
back then, but I think the gauge is not so accurate on the low end now.
Could something internal to the tank be wrong? Pick-up tube? Does anyone
have a pic or drawing of what the inside of a tank looks like?
Thanks,
Ed in CT
