Totally loved everything until the last line - "ATF loss at the governor seal going into he final drive is a fairly common problem."

The governor cover, with o-ring is on the left outside of the auto trans, and it's not uncommon for a small leak to develop there. ( unless there is also some other governor between the auto trans part and differential that you are talking about ) . And if you have ATF getting into the differential area....... A pretty significant thing that must be addressed. The only time I've ever had that the auto trans would also not work right, like drag or bind horribly in reverse. I've not done it, but I've been told by a vw trans rebuilding company that it's not overly technical to repair the seal/s between the auto trans part and the differential part. Scott

Like the engine, you don't want to fill it to the top mark. That is not the full mark. The top mark is the max do not ever exceed no matter what mark. 1/2 quart will get you where you need to be but happened that the level went down? You want the trans warm, engine running and van level before topping it off. ATF loss at the governor seal going into he final drive is a fairly common problem.

Does anyone know how much fluid it takes to raise the level from the bottom mark to the top? I need to add fluid and I'm curious as to the actual amount of fluid between the two marks so that I don't have to dribble it in a little at a time.
