Reman. axles from Honda are just that, remanufactured, they replace all wear components automatically. Honda is particular even about the core you turn in, it must be a genuine Honda core and assembled, not in pieces, or it is not accepted. Most aftermarket rebuilders, there is a difference between rebuilt and remanufactured, will take any core as long as the parts are all there. I do not recall ever having a Honda reman. part fail in the almost 14 years that I have been with a dual Honda/Acura dealership. In fact in our dealership we maybe file a parts warranty claim(for a part sold over the counter, not that came on a new car) once every couple of years. A pretty good average considering we are selling over 3 miilion a year in parts.

What year Passat do you have, and which engine? We have an `03 4Motion Wagon with the V6, it does not leak oil, it burns it. I am not sure of the exact consumption rate, but I can tell that is is higher than any other vehicle I have ever owned. It even makes my Triumph Spitfire look good, puddles on the driveway and all! This is normal for them according to my local shop of choice for repairs that I do not feel up to for it or our vans. My only complaint with the Passat besides oil consumption is the price of parts and whether you can get what you need or have to buy a larger assembly. The bezel around the homelink garage door buttons on the drivers sun visor broke off, but you can't buy it seperately, you have to get the entire visor for almost $400.00. Thankfully a little glue does the trick for a lot less.
