This thread is not about Vanagons bit it's a VW topic that some of us are concerned. I appreciate everyone's response. I can not reply to everyone as it would take a whole day. But you can be assured that I appreciate your responses.

Mark, The boots were already torn when I began to feel the noise. After failing the first time to get Stevens Crook VW to honor a warranty repair I read the fine print of my owner's manual. It is the words "internal parts" that made me do a little bit googling. I found reports of other Passat owners in other parts of the nation having to pay for the boots but free replacement CV joints from VW. So I purchased a pair of Lobro boot kits and replaced them myself. I was also hoping that by putting in fresh lubricant came with the Lobro boot kits might quiet the CV joints. It did not. A few months later the noise continues but not really worsened. I was in the dearler's place for oil filter yesterday. I tried to see if they will repeat their same denial tatics again. They did. They basically says CV joint is never covered by powertrain warranty, an out right straight lie if you look at my owner's manual. They did not even looked at my CV joints. They simply said no warranty. I could take them to a court if they insist in that. But I can not justify the effort in doing that. My kid is a lawyer. My free lawyer's advise is, dad, it's small money. I don't have time to help you.

I am an average driver. I have never received a speeding ticket in my life. I do not drive aggressively. My Passat has been to some forest roads a few times but so have my Vanagons. I had only one torn CV boot on two of my Vanagons. It was an outer one which was well protected in the rear suspension cage. My Vanagons are all 20+ years old. The Passat is only 7.
