i painted my lower rad grille and chin spoiler on my '84 vanagon back in 1997 (before "fusion" was on the shelves).

simply scuffed them with a scotchbrite pad, and wiped them down with paint thinner/mineral sprits to remove any residual petroleum based 'protectants" (ie, armor all etc) then sprayed them with rustoleum satin black.

theyve held up thru numerous pressurewashings and bug splats over the last 10 years and still look great.
