I actually do enjoy looking at bands of high-quality ply--the 9-11 ply hardwood type. I made a table for my westy out of the stuff (original was missing) and rounded off the edges with a router, sanded to a fare-the-well, and think they look nice. More durable than edge-banding for surfaces that get wear, and less likely to hurt when you get thrown into them.
