Thanks for the offer Todd. How hard is it to find a SA Tranny? Does it come
with the low granny gear normally? And does it fit differently and better
than a syncro tranny?
Thanks for your help!
Wishing you many miles of smiles!

Not a syncro transmission, but I have an 094 5speed from Sought Africa that
I put in my 2wd 88 Westy and added the Syncro diff lock.
I also added the syncro dash parts and diff-lock knob. It was a relatively
easy swap.
You should also replace the 4spd shift linkage.
I have a parts list if you are interested.
P.S. it is not an inexpensive conversion.
I did have the transmission regeared so 5th is and OD - so that cuts my
freeway rpm significantly and ups the MPG by about 1mpg.

Hello Fellow Vanagon Pilots,
Has anyone installed a 5 speed Syncro tranny with diff lock in a 2WD
Vanagon? How difficult is this? Any unforeseen challenges? I tow a light
weight boat behind my 2WD Westy in the summer and I need the granny gear and
the diff lock to get out of some boat ramps. Do I have to locate a syncro
dash module with the locker switches or can I just rig up a regular switch.
Is there any shift linkage modifications? Any other additional parts I need
to purchase?
Thank you in advance for your help and advice.
Anyone have a syncro tranny for sale?
Wishing you many miles of smiles!
