i've earned my living as a computer geek for around 40 years. i personally own a sun solaris server, a linux desktop box, a pc laptop and a mac laptop. the sun is the most stable. i just checked and it's been up 438 days. no problems. it's an smtp (email) server, a dns server, a web server and a file server. the linux (redhat) desktop has been up 33 days. it's mostly used for reading email, surfing the web and programming. the mac laptop (macbook pro) is the machine i always carry around with me and the one i use for all my music. i love all three of these.

the pc is the newest machine. it mostly gathers dust. i got it so i could run some pc only software and games. it's ok, but vista isn't my favorite o/s. it's more stable than many other microsoft o/s's i've used over the years but still is not as stable as any of the others. for a non-geek, i'd recommend a mac any day. i've bought one for both of my grandkids and one for my mother. the two year old, the eight year old and the 84 year old all use their macs and enjoy them. as far as i'm concerned, you can't go wrong with a mac.
