I received a number of e-mails about the link, so I re-posting.

It is a little shorter, hopefully it will work, if it doesn't, go to the
main site at www.fueleconomy.gov and select "New 1985-2008 MPG estimates"
Then choose the year of your 1985 or newer Vanagon... drill down to the
compare side by side calculator.

The government revised their MPG ratings, and they actually have a site
which provides the MPG for just about every vehicle sold in the US since
1985.



They do a side by side compare of the new MPG with the old MPG ratings.  And
provide conversions for every vehicle back to 1985.
