Macintoshes have better-quality components, even though quality has dropped since the days of the old-generation G3/4s. It's not just the processor.

>ave encountered who do own them love them, swear by them, and will never >look to MS again.

I've only met one (my bro-in-law, and he's English) who went over to the Dark Side. Everyone else has seen the Light and gone for Mac...

>I've been told they are rock solid.

Uh... depends. My G3 & G4 are anything BUT stable, on both OS9.2 & 10, but this is a problem sitting somewhere in my harddrive... as it has followed the HD from one computer to another. Generally Macs DON'T crash... whereas Windoze does so often. And in theory Macs NEVER 4need the OS reinstalled.

On the other hand, my old Mac 6116CD with G3 upgrade and almost no RAM is stable as a very large rock... even though I can't run OSX on it (can't install enough RAM to do it). I must say that I do NOT like OSX. Classic is much simpler, especially when looking for items.

>I've been tempted >myself - my only concern has been availablility of software and tools - however that concern could be from the dark ages.

What could you possibly want that isn't available for Macs? Apart from Microsloth apps & ETKA...

>G4's are 2 generations old, & we have several laying around the boneyard gathering dust.

That's "lying". G3s & G4s are eminently upgradable. I recently swapped my blue & white 35omHz G3 with 850mHz upgrade for a Graphite AGP G34 with 1400mHz upgrade, and this is very fast. Probably equivalent in speed to a 2-2.5gHz "PC".

>If you want a computer that wont fall apart and is very much impervious to >spyware and viruses, Go mac, you wont go back!

Unfortunately, now that Macs are becoming more popular and running Intels, viruses are beginning to appear for them. Another reason for me to prefer the old OSes.
