While I admit a rainfly would be nice, to avoid having to travel with wet canvas (and dry it out
when you get home), it's not a necessity. Here on the raincoast, we've camped in some pretty
major downpours and never had a problem. I recall our first weekend trip in our Westy in '96
when it rained so hard the "new" road to Strathcona Park washed out. Our original canvas
has a small tear which has been patched, and this is the only part which will drip a bit during
heavy rain. I put a cup on the ledge to catch the drips.
On longer trips where you might be travelling for weeks without a chance to dry things out, a
rainfly would be nice to have though. Even without rain, there is significant moisture buildup
just from sleeping, so drying the canvas after camping is always a good idea...
