The biggest thing I'd like about a rainfly is the ability to open the window.  It can get very humid in the van during a rain storm.  I've never had a problem getting too wet before and I've camped in some big storms.

  Now lightning is another story...  Sleeping up top during a lightning storm doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
