Did you check the valve guides for wear of play? Worn guides, especially
intakes can cause all sorts of running problems from oil consumption to
bad idle. The intake valves also get a seal washer on the stem.

I have my heads all cleaned up and the valves lapped.  Do I put motor oil
on the valve stems to pre lub them before assembly?  Thanks
